Quango Definition:

Popular acronym for one of a large number of semi-permanent public commissions or agencies usually in the gift of minister of the Crown. Though many such bodies fill a useful role (e.g. advisory consultation and arbitration service and the NEDC), others do little more than add to the already excessive numbers or bureaucrats paid out of the public purse. These Quasi-Autonomous Non-Governmental Organizations tend to be excellent examples of Parkinson's law with members expanding in a geometrical progression and the chairman ship often little more that sinecure. The main objection to the emergence and growth of the Quango lies less in the fact that they are funded from the public purse than in the power they often possess to dispose of large amounts of public money.
